-- On August 14, 2011, Alum Sean Hartnett '09, of Monmouth University, returned to his historical roots -- Ballyhooly, Ireland, the home of his father, running great John Hartnett -- for the aptly named John Hartnett Challenge 10K! According to the Running in Cork Blog "the course was a tough 9.5 mile course taking in some of the local hills with several off-road sections" . . . [but] "this year, it has changed to a more familar 10k race over a reasonably flat circuit so as to attract more runners." Sean was one of those runners, winning the race in a genteel 35:31! Results at: Running Ireland. In addition, Villanova Running lifted the story from Athletics Ireland but added a picture of Sean's famous father "back in the day." (Those of you who are friends of John might be interested in the summary of his racing career at Running in Ireland.)

Ryan finished 81st overall and 4th on his team, clocking 17:54.53 in the 5K race. GO RYAN! As an aside, Ryan will probably remember this race for awhile because of the unusual conditions! When they designed this course, they probably thought it would be really cool to run along the canal at the park but that was before the "Great Flood of 2011!" They quickly redesigned the course, cutting it from 8K to 5K, but not all the water issues were solved. If you get a chance, check out picture #19 of a Rutgers' runner at Go Dutchmen photo gallery! Results at: Go Dutchmen.

-- On September 17, 2011, Alum Chris Applegate '09, of Bucknell University, traveled to Pittsburgh for the Duquesne V. Bucknell Dual Meet on the Schenley Park 8K course. -- On September 17, 2011, Alum Greg Malloy '11, of Boston University, competed in his first official college race, the Iona College -- Brother John Paddy Doyle -- Meet of Champions, at historic VanCortlandt Park in New York City: hallowed ground for cross country runners in this region . . . and not because so many of them have "died" on the courses there! Greg finished the 8K course in 27:56.99 (5:38 pace), apparently the second freshman on the BC team to finish! GO GREG! Details at: Iona Sports.

-- On September 18, 2011, Alum Joe Halin '00, of the Moorestown Running Company, continued his assault on his personal records by racing the Philadelphia Rock'n'Roll 1/2 Marathon! Yikes! See the Main Page for the event at: Rock'n'Roll 1/2 Marathon; and for the more detailed "participants page" with 5K, 10K and 10M splits, check out: Joe Halin Page.

-- On October 29. 2011, Alums Alex Yersak '08, of The College of New Jersey and Ryan Bobb '11, of Rutgers University competed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships in the driving rain at Stockton College. Ryan, on the other hand, dropped 38 seconds from his last recorded 8K time on September 30th. He clocked 28:16.78 (5:41 pace) for 42nd. -- On October 29, 2011, Alum Chris Applegate '09, of Bucknell University made the trip up to wintry Lehigh University for the Patriot League Cross Country Championships. Chris navigated the snow-covered course in 27:22 (5:31 pace and 36 seconds faster than his race there a month ago) finishing 59th overall and 10th on his team. The team finished 5th in the 8-team conference but only one of their top seven is a Senior, with four Freshmen, so it looks good for the future. Proud father, Stan Applegate, sent these pictures to demonstrate that the phrase ". . . navigated the snow-covered course . . ." doesn't quite capture the sublime experience! You decide! Results at: Navy Sports.

This time supreme bragging rights go to Sean AND his Monmouth team as he finished 1st among the Alums (49th in 27:18, 5:28 pace) and his team finished highest at 4th! The picture is clouded after that: Chris came in 2nd among the Alums (55th in 27:30, 5:30 pace) but his Bucknell team finished 12th overall. Bringing up the rear, so to speak, in this "Battle of the Alums" was Steve's 3rd place among the Alums (59th in 27:35, 5:31 pace) but his Rutgers team whipped the Bucknell team by finishing 8th to their 12th place! OK, so no one "tore up the course" but when it comes to bragging over the Thanksgiving break a few seconds can translate into hours! Parent Stan Applegate was there to record it all and he provided the pictures! Results available at: IC4A Results.

-- On November 19, 2011, Alum Joe Halin '00, of the Moorestown Running Company, ran the Philadelphia Marathon through the streets of the city. Joe set a strong "national class" pace throughout, taking 20th out of 10,228, finishing in 2:29.49! Yikes! Details include almost clockwork pacing through the first 30K: 5:42.8 overall, with the 10K in 35.22 (5:42), the Half-Marathon in 1:14.28 (5:41), and the 30K in 1:46.00 (5:41)! His pace dropped a tad on that last 12K segment (5:47?) but sub-2:30 is an incredible achievement! GO JOE! Interestingly, we just heard a question proportedly asked by Frank Shorter in 1970 that Joe might appreciate: "Why couldn't Pheiddipedes have died at 20 miles?" "Sample" pictures below . . . we should have sent Stan Applegate! Details at Active Results.

In the Long Jump, he began well with three decent jumps but then fouled twice before passing out of the competition. Both the HJ and LJ marks meet qualifying standards for the ECAC Championships, and both set new PR's and indoor records at GMC! Details at: Go Army Sports.

-- On January 19, 2012, Alum Greg Malloy '11, of Boston College, stayed at home for the Boston College Multi-Team Meet. Greg must have been discombobulated by all of this -- or maybe he's studying too much!? -- as he competed in the mile, clocking 4:42.03; and the 3K, clocking 9:42.32. Details at: Direct Athletics.

Darren competed at the Colgate University Class of 1932 Invitational at the Colgate Field House in Hamilton, NY. Full results at: Leone Timing.

-- On January 28, 2012, Alum Justin Turner '09, of Gwynedd-Mercy College, traveled to the University of Delaware in Newark for the Thompson Invitational where, apparently, he competed only in the 60m Dash, finishing 40th out of 50 finishers in a fiery 7.78! He also raced the 5K, finishing in 9th place clocking 15:17.35. Meanwhile, Ed took 3rd in the High Jump competition, clearing 2.01m (6' 7.1'). That's a PR at the Armory, which with all the distractions close-by, isn't a great place to jump! He also competed in the Long Jump, bounding 6.65m (21' 9.8") and finishing 14th out of 31 jumpers. Details at: Direct Athletics.

-- On March 2, 2012, Alum Darren McCluskey '11, of Syracuse University, returned to the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City for the Columbia Last Chance Meet where he competed in both the 60m High Hurdles and the 200m Dash. Marc finished 12th overall in 1:12.59 and that's all the website provides at this time . . . so we can't see how his pace held up throughout the race! We can, however, make fun of the first finish line picture they provided and wonder why Marc didn't take the team's crack photographer along on the trip?! (OK, Marc must have threatened to sue if they posted only that one finish line picture so now, two days later, they have so many "Pelly pics" that his mother must have been on the photo team!) Picture page at: Pelly Pics; and results page at: Results. Marc's BIB Number is 208.

-- On March 9, 2012, Alum Justin Turner '09, of Gwynedd-Mercy College, traveled to the end of the Earth -- or at least it must have felt that way -- when he went to the Bear Center at Grinnell College, Iowa (only one hour from Des Moines!) for the 2012 NCAA Division III Track and Field Championship. Last week, Justin took 1st in the High Jump at 2.07m (6' 9.5") but this week all he could manage was 9th place at 2.05m (6' 8.7"). Justin came in at 2.00m (6' 6.7") but only cleared on his 3rd attempt at that height! At 2.05m (6' 9.5"), he cleared on his second attempt, but then he failed to clear at 2.08 (6' 9.8"). As a result, Justin missed being named "All-American," a designation he won last year, by one place! Earlier in the week, the GMC website reported, Justin "was named the Mideast Region Field Athlete of the Year for the indoor season. . . . [he ended] the year with a season-best of 2.09 meters, a new program record, and a third consecutive ECAC Indoor Championship." Meet results at: MileSplit.

Spring Track, 2012

-- On March 17, 2012, Alums Joe Halin '00, of the Moorestown Running Company, Marc Pelerin '02, now teaching and coaching at Cherokee, and Ty Somers '11, now at Burlington County College for the semester, joined about ten team members for the traditional Spring distance run at the Adrenaline 5K in Haddonfield, NJ. As expected, the older Alums proved to be too much for Ty and for the team! Joe took 8th against a strong field in 15:34 (5:00 pace), with Marc close behind in 20th at 15:47 (5:04 pace). Ty was back a bit, finishing in 64th at 17:38 (5:39 pace). The race was made even more interesting because Cherokee's star distance runner, Shawn Wilson, wearing his "lucky" green Ireland soccer shirt, challenged Marc, suggesting that it was time for the older generation to step aside for the new! Unfortunately for Shawn, Marc would have none of that and, though we're told he purposely slowed at various times during the race to allow the young guy some hope, he crossed the finish line 6 seconds before him!

Coach Shaklee provided his All-Time Bancroft-Adrenaline PR List which shows Shawn in 2nd place among Cherokee runners while they were in high school -- behind Keith Kreiger who, as an 11th grader, clocked 15:13! -- and 5th place when you include the post-grad times of Marc Pelerin (14:43 in 2009, Joe Halin (15:32 in 2012), and Coach Shaklee (15:42 in 1999)! Of course, Coach Shaklee would be the last to point to his name ahead of Shawn's, especially when he ran it at the advanced age of 44! Access that list at: All-Time Bancroft-Adrenaline PR List. Results at: L and M Sports.

-- On May 14, 2012, Alum Justin Turner '09, of Gwynedd-Mercy College, bussed down to Swarthmore College for their Last Chance Meet. The breezy and wet weather didn't cooperate for those truly seeking a "last chance" to qualify for up-coming regional meets. Justin won the High Jump at a relatively low 1.96m (6' 4.75") but, based on earlier performances, he is moving on to the ECAC Division III Championships on May 18th. Details at: Swarthmore.

-- On May 18, 2012, Alum Justin Turner '09, of Gwynedd-Mercy College, traveled to the ECAC Division III Track and Field Championships at Rennsselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Justin took 2nd of 25 competitors in the High Jump clearing 2.01m (6' 7"). In April, Justin was ranked # 1 on the NCAA Div III Outdoor Qualifier List at 2.05m (6' 8.75") but the most recent list has him tied for # 18 with six others. Only the top 20 qualify and, based on his late- season jumps, it seems unlikely he will be selected. Passing detail: one inch higher and he would be 7th! Meet details at: Direct Athletics.
