Summer and Cross Country, 2014

-- On July 4, 2014, a small group of Alums, including several recent grads, returned for what has become something of an alumni run in Marlton, the Marlton Mayor's Cup 5K! Once again, Shawn Wilson '13, beat the rest of the Alums and the rest of the field finishing 1st in 15:55 (drop from 16:21 last year). Behind Shawn was Kyle Miller '09, who finished 3rd in 17:29 and dropped 16 seconds off his time last year!; Kaleb Burch '13; Matt Mueller '00; Mike Candy '05; Mike Hare '12; Evan Stone '09; Dan Mintzer '13; Drew Viscidy '12; and, eventually, Freddy Rasmussen '13! Details at: L & M Sports.

-- On August 10, 2014, The Princeton Review announced their annual list of "Best Party Schools" and, once again, among the private universities, Syracuse took the top ranking! Raising this subject last year, we were assured that Alums Darren McCluskey '11 and Shawn Wilson '13 knew nothing of Syracuse's party reputation and selected the school largely because of its solid academic reputation! GO DARREN! . . . GO SHAWN! By the way, checking on Shawn in Cross Country, the team posted a summary of Shawn's previous performances at College Performances.

-- In mid-August, several Alums served as counselors at the RunningWorks Cross Country Camp in Canadensis, PA. They included high school coaches Marc Pelerin '02, Kevin Cuneo '04, and Ted Schickling '08, and college athlete Greg Malloy '11. Greg's playing a fierce game of kickball and he insisted on a picture of his damaged legs; Ted jumps for joy on learning he's ready for A Group Boys next year; Kevin focuses on a Cherokee kid even though he's now at Timber Creek; and Marc will look great on the beach and at his wedding but no one in Senegal carries that much weight!

-- On September 6, 2014, Alum Shawn Wilson, '13, of Syracuse University, made his official debut as a member of the Cross Country team in the Harry Lang Invitational, a somewhat grandly-named dual meet against Colgate University fifty miles southeast at Colgate in Hamilson, NY. Shawn won the 6400m event in 20:38.80 (5:12 pace) and he and four others on his team clearly ran as a pack, finishing within about 1 second of each other! Not sure who was official or not but the Syracuse website claimed Syracuse took 11 of the top 12 spots at the finish! Next week's Harry Groves meet at Penn State will be a much greater challenge! Details at: Cuse.com.

-- On September 6, 2014, Alum Kaleb Burch, '14, of Messiah College, raced for the first time as a Messiah Falcon! Competing on a very hot and humid day at Lebanon Valley College's Dutchmen XC Invitational in Lebanon, Kaleb finished 18th in the race and 8th on his team in 29:20.29 (5:52 pace). The team finished first and, as the meet featured many of Messiah's MAC opponents, it gave them some idea of what to expect this season. Details at: Go Dutchmen.

-- On September 6, 2014, Alum Aiden Lynch, '11, of Felician College, opened his season at the Fordham Fiasco and, for him, it appears to have been a fiasco! He raced the 5 Mile at Van Cortlandt and, in the Div II, III, and JC Race, he clocked 35:42.06 (7:09 pace) and finished 85th out of 87 runners! Yikes! We almost hope he was sickened by the heat and will recover in time for his next race! Come on, Aiden! Details at: Fordham Sports.

-- On September 13, 2014, Alum Shawn Wilson, '13, of Syracuse University, traveled to Penn State for the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, a 12-team competition where Syracuse took 2nd behind Penn State and Shawn placed 15th overall in 26:28. The race had the unusual distance of 8.369K (5.2 miles) so Shawn's pace was 5.06. Syracuse took 2nd behind Penn State. Details at: Direct Athletics.

-- On September 19, 2014, Alum Marc Pelerin, '02, now teaching and coaching at Haddon Heights High School, was inducted into the 2014 Cherokee High School Athletic Hall of Fame! Marc was introduced by his former coach, Steve Shaklee who remarked on his three individual Group IV titles in Track and Field and his Meet of Champions title in Cross Country! Picture from the Central Record shows Marc on the far left.

-- On September 28, 2014, Alum Marc Pelerin, '02, now teaching and coaching at Haddon Heights High School, and perhaps buoyed by his recent induction into Cherokee's Hall of Fame, whimsically entered the Run Like It's Recess 5K, a charity run in Haddon Heights, NJ. Marc has been concentrating on training his team instead of training himself and he surprised everyone when he entered and won the race. His time: 17:51 (5:44 pace). His wife, Carly, also coaching at Haddon Heights, was the first female to finish! Her time: 20:27 (6:34 pace). Details at: L and M Sports.

-- On October 30, 2014, the Syracuse Cross Country team wrecked the 15-team Atlantic Coast Conference Championships for the second year in a row and the fifth time in six years! To put the "wrecking" in perspective, their 7th man finished in 15th crossing the line in 23:51 and the team beat 2nd place NC State by 58 points! A relatively young team, they had one Senior, two Juniors, two Sophomores, and two Freshmen in that group! They ran ten men and, important to us here at Cherokee, Alum Shawn Wilson, '13, didn't get to race! He did make the awards photo but he's empty-handed! Race details at: Cuse.com.

Villanova won the Mid-Atlantic Regionals at Penn State by 33 points over their closest rival, Georgetown; and Syracuse won the Northeast Regionals at Van Cortlandt Park by only 3 points over Providence and 15 points over Iona! Both teams had very tight scoring fives! For Villanova, the top five guys finished within 13 seconds of each other; and for Syracuse, their top five guys finished within 8 seconds of each other! Yikes! Alum Shawn Wilson, '13, of Syracuse University, was listed as an alternate and did not compete. Details at: USA/MileSplit
