Moorestown Invitational

On April 12, 2014, Cherokee traveled to near-by Moorestown High School for the 8th Moorestown Invitational. Several relay teams did very well! The 400IH Relay team of Brent Lobascio and Alfred Pannaccio both PR'd, with Brent placing 6th overall; and the Shuttle Hurdle Relay Team of Marc Woodard, Mike White, Brent Lobascio and Al Panaccio (stepping in for injured Jason Kramer) took 1st in the large school race with the fastest time for the team this year. In addition, the 4 X 100 meter team of Marc Woodard, Shawn Tracey, Ronnie Oxendine and Xavier Garrett tied for 6th running while running a decent 45.82! Finally, the Sprint Medley Team of Woodard (200), White (200), Shawn Tracy (400) and Ty Kurzawa (800) placed 2nd running a quick 3:37.77, with Ty dipping under 2:00 for the first time!

In the distance events, Nick Maccariella's 9th place time in the 1500m converts to a 1600m time that is a PR by 3 seconds! And, in the Field, Chase Hoger again PR'd in the shot put with a toss of 46' 5".

Dual Meet: Lenape High School

On April 16, 2014, Cherokee stayed at home for their dual meet against cross-town rival Lenape High School and, although they lost, they made it a close meet! Several sprinters added key points throughout the meet: Marc Woodard won the 100m Dash and took 2nd in the 200m Dash, the 110HH and the Long Jump; and Shawn Tracey picked-up two second place points, the 100m Dash and the 200m Dash! In the Field, Phil Quipot threw a PR 107' 2" and won the Discus after taking the 3rd spot in a Cherokee sweep of the Shot Put! That sweep was led by Chase Hoger who threw his own PR 46' 11", John Hemple 2nd, and Quipot in 3rd! Finally, Jordan Aughenbaugh took second in the Pole Vault and High Jump, and 3rd in the Javelin!

It was a pretty successful day for the distance team, highlighted by the 3200m Run. Kaleb Burch and Nick Falk executed a perfect race plan and sprinted away from Lenape's Dan O'Leary on the last lap to take 1st and 2nd! Their second mile was 20 seconds faster than their first -- a huge negative split and a clear indication that they can go even faster. Behind them, Justin DeTone finished 4th with a new PR and Lenny Wen did the pacing for the second pack, clicking off even splits and helping himself, Brendan Falzone, Luke Ambrose and Joey Thompson all run sub-12 in their first ever track 3200m race. Earlier in the meet, Nick Maccariella ran a sound tactical race and just missed getting the victory in a sprint finish with Lenape's Tom Daub in the 1600. Behind him, Jack Shea, Mike McShane and Pat Mahoney all PR'd. In the 800m Run, Mike Zurzolo and Steve Gravlin ran strong races setting sizable PR's and Jack Shea, came back from the 1600m Run to get his second PR of the meet! Perhaps the most impressive PR of the group was set by Cameron Wilburn who dropped 15 seconds from his PR set earlier this year!

This meet, the photographer focused (pun intended!) on our Weight men, who scored big points for the team, and several Jumpers!

Woodbury Relays

On April 19, 2014, a small group of Cherokee's best sprinters/hurdlers traveled to Woodbury High School for the 42nd Annual Woodbury Relays! The competition is always excellent at Woodbury because the top teams in each race take home a watch to honor their performances. Unfortunately, for Cherokee, the guys will have to depend on their iPhones as time pieces . . . at least until next year!

.

Most disappointing was the DQ in the 4 X 100m Relay! The well-respected team of Marc Woodard, Shawn Tracy, Ronnie Oxendine and Xavier Garrett tripped-up somewhere and the yellow flag flew singling their disqualification in the race! The Shuttle Hurdle team of Brent Labascio, Mike White, Jason Kramer and Marc Woodward did better, finishing 3rd but had that one guy not lost his footing . . . yeah, I know, "coulda, woulda, shoulda . . .. Finally, the Sprint Medley Relay team of Mike White, Shawn Tracey, Marc Woodard and Ty Kurzawa finished 4th with Shawn's 50.1 lead-off in the 400m singling that they were serious contenders!

Dual Meet: Cherry Hill High School East

On April 22, 2014, Cherokee met conference-rival Cherry Hill High School East under threatening skies at home. That should have served as an omen . . . the team performed well but lost to a tough opponent! The highlight of the meet was a 20-point performance by Marc Woodard who won the 100m Dash, the 200m Dash, the 110m High Hurdles, and the Long Jump . . . Yikes! . . . but other good things happened too!

In the distance events, there was an exciting win in the 800m Run (called by an official) by Ty Kurzawa as he and an East runner crossed the line together in 2:00.5! In addition, though he finished in 4th and failed to score a point, Freshman Nick Falk ran an outstanding 4:33 in the 1600m!

In the Field, Chase Hoger threw another PR in the Shot Put, going over 47' for the first time, and took 1st! Jordan Augenbaugh stepped-up in the Pole Vault where he took 1st, placed 2nd in the High Jump on "misses," and took 3rd in the Javelin! And Neil Amin, a kid loaded with raw talent, jumped an excellent 36' to place 2nd in the Triple Jump!

Penn Relays

On April 24 and 26, 2014, Cherokee traveled across the river to The University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field and the 120th Annual Penn Relays! This three-day meet is one of the most incredible opportunities for Cherokee athletes to challenge the best runners from around the United States and the Carribbean and, even when not at their peak, it's a great experience!

Cherokee entered two events with athletes who never competed at the Penn Relays before: Marc Woodard, Mike White, Rob Curley and Xavier Garrett in the 4 X 100m Relay; and Marc Woodard, Rob Curley, Matt Powell and Tyler Kurzawa in the 4 X 400m Relay.

Dual Meet: Washington Township High School

On April 29, 2014, Cherokee traveled to Washington Township High School for the final dual meet of the season. There, despite cold temperatures, strong winds and intermittent rain, they defeated Township! Marc Woodard was, once again, the Chief's top point scorer, leading a Cherokee sweep of the 100m Dash, ahead of Shawn Tracy and Ronnie Oxendine, and taking 1st in the 110m High Hurdles, just ahead of teammate, Mike White. Woodard also finished 2nd in the Long Jump. Other notable performances on the track for Cherokee included Kaleb Burch and Justin DeTone taking 1st and 2nd in the 1600m Run; David Osterhout crushing everyone else in his heat of the 110m High Hurdles; Ronnie Oxendine's win in the 200m Dash; Tyler Kurzawa's 1st in the 400m Dash; Brent Labascio's victory in the 400m Intermediate Hurdles; and the winning 4 X 400m Relay team, composed of two sophomores -- Tyler Kurzawa and Rob Curley -- and two freshmen -- Matt Powell and Casy Malik.

In the Field, Jordan Augenbaugh was a close 2nd in points scored by Marc Woodard, winning the Pole Vault, High Jump and taking 3rd in the Javelin! Chase Hoger and John Hemple went 2nd and 3rd in the Shot Put; and Sam Kramer won the Triple Jump. Sam then joined his brother Jay Kramer in the Long Jump where he took 3rd behind Jay, who took 2nd!

Holmdel Twilight Series: Night of 3200's

On May 2, 2014, Cherokee traveled to Holmdel High School for one of their unusual twilight meets, the 7th Annual Holmdel Twilight Series: Night of 3200's. Beginning as the sun set and the wind died down, the meet consisted of twelve heats of the 3200m, a dream event for serious distance runners! And, to put it mildly, Cherokee was geared-up to compete!

Going in, the fastest 3200m PR on the team was Kaleb Burch's 10:06. After this meet, Cherokee had five guys under 10:00! The top performance of the night was turned in by Nick Falk, who broke Greg Bredeck's freshman school record of 9:49.9 set in 2003, finishing 3rd in his heat at 9:48.87! In the same heat, Kaleb Burch and Nick Maccariella dropped 14 and 16 seconds respectively from their previous best times at 9:52.47 and 9:52.63! In the previous heat, Justin DeTone and Jack Shea both had big breakthroughs with Justin dropping 33 seconds to 9:55.43 and Jack dropping 23 seconds to 9:57.65! Nick Falk and Jack Shea are just the 3rd and 4th freshmen in Cherokee school history to run under 10:00 for the 3200m . . . and they did it in the same meet! Mike Zurzolo just missed winning heat 8, finishing just .16 seconds behind the winner with a time of 10:14.57, a PR by more than 30 seconds. Behind him, Steve Gravlin PR'd by 26 seconds, running 10:25.31! In an earlier heat, three freshmen, Brendan Falzone, Joey Thompson and Luke Ambrose, all ran well to set new PR's; and, in the 2nd heat of the evening, Josh Annandsingh, Rob O'Leary and Pat Mahoney all ran well in their first ever 3200m race!

Videos from the meet are available at: The Track Show.

SJ Individuals and SJ Relays

On May 1 and 3, 2014, Cherokee sent pieces of the team to two related meets in South Jersey: the South Jersey Open and the South Jersey Relays. The biggest highlight from the SJ Open was Tyler Kurzawa running 1:59:88 to become only the 21st athlete in school history to crack the two minute barrier! Another fine performance came from Marc Woodard in the 110M High Hurdles as he clocked an apparent PR in 15:55 and just missed qualifying for the finals in the event!

At the South Jersey Relays on Saturday, top three medal-winning performances were turned in by: Matt Powell, Casey Malik, Anton Specht and Dan Schwartz who won the Freshman 4 X 200m Relay; and, with Dan Weiss, placed 3rd in Freshman 4 X 100! Also, Mike Algarra joined Powell, Malik and Schwartz to place 2nd in the Freshman Sprint Medley. Among the Varsity, Marc Woodard, Ronnie Oxendine, Rob Curley and Shawn Tracey took 3rd in the 4 X 100m Relay. David Osterhout and Sam Kramer placed 3rd in the JV High Jump; and Chase Hoger improved his PR in the Shot Put by over a foot to 49' 3' which was the 3rd best toss of the meet!

Richard's Run

On May 4, 2014, Coach Shaklee and several of Cherokee's distance team traveled to Cooper River in Pennsauken, New Jersey for the 8th Annual Richard's Run. This race is dedicated to the many children who have lost their lives to a particularly deadly form of bone cancer, Ewing's Sarcoma. In 2008, Tim Frantz, one of our cross country team members died of the disease (see our memorial page on this website) and since then Cherokee runners have participated in Richard's Run as a way to remember Tim and support the efforts of the Go4the Goal organization. If you couldn't run and want to remember Tim in a tangible way, consider donating to the organization at Go4the Goal. Meanwhile, the results from the 2014 5K race can be found at L & M Sports, and here are some pictures of Coach Shaklee and several Cherokee athletes who were at the race.

Lenape District Track and Field Championships

On May 8, 2014, Cherokee traveled across town to Lenape High School for the 7th Annual Lenape District T & F Championship. Cherokee won "The District Cup" each of the first five years but took second both last year and this. Marc Woodard made a big contribution to the final score as he took 1st in the 110m High Hurdles, 2nd in the 100m Dash, and 3rd in the Long Jump! Close behind on scoring was Shawn Tracey who won the 400m Dash and finished 2nd in the 200m Dash; and Ronnie Oxendine who took 3rd and 4th respectively in the 100 and 200m Dashes!

Among the distance performers, Freshman Nick Falk used a strong finishing kick to take the victory in the 3200m Run, with Kaleb Burch taking 3rd and Justin DeTone placing 5th. Burch and DeTone also placed 2nd and 4th in the 1600m Run, which was a nice double! Finally, Nick Maccariella took 2nd in the 5000 Meter Run!

In the Field, Chase Hoger took another step closer to the the 50' mark as he won the Shot Put with a toss of 49' 10.75", with Sophomore, John Hemple placing 4th. Jordan Aughenbaugh won the Pole Vault at 11', and Freshman, Giovetis Adonis made a 16' improvement and took 5th in the Javelin competition!

Cherokee Invitational

On May 12, 2014, Cherokee hosted the Fourteenth Annual Cherokee Invitational, the earliest meet of its kind in New Jersey devoted to younger athletes who may or may not make it to the Sectional Championships! Several of our guys performed well at the meet!

In the Sprints, Matt Powell set a new PR and placed 10th in the 400m Dash, and then he and Cristian Ognibene, Al Panacio and Rob Curley ran a strong race to take 4th in the 4 X 400m Relay! In the Distance events, Noah Gil set a new PR and placed 4th in the 800m Run; and in the same event, Joey Thompson, Luke Ambrose and Brendan Falzone dropped their PR's, while Cameron Wilburn dropped five seconds and Josh Annandsingh dropped ten seconds off their PR's!

In the Field, Daulton Hopkins PR'd in the Long Jump to finish 5th, John Hemple placed 3rd in the Shot Put, and Phil Quipot took 2nd in the Discus and 3rd in the Javelin!
