On Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, the team returned to Delsea High School for PT II of the South Jersey Invitationals. PT I was the SJ Elite Championships on May 1st where the best of South Jersey competed, and PT II is an "Open" invitation to all the teams of SJ.
The top Distance runners raced on May 1st and did not compete at this "Open." Cherokee was largely represented by our Sprint and Field athletes. In the 100m Dash, 9th grader Davis Walker took 8th/124 overall, while Mateo Rosario took 31st, Lance Cheng finished in 72nd, and Noah Calderon finished in 83rd. All set new PR's! In the 200m Dash, Davis Walker returned, finishing in 19th/116 overall, with another PR; Mateo Rosario finished in 28th just missing a PR; and Lance Cheng finished in 73rd with a PR! In the 400m Dash, four Chiefs raced the event, three with PR's! Colin Feehan (63rd/113 overall), Matt Muschek (71st) and Noah Siem (87th) set PR's and Luke Ehly (92nd) was close. Finally, in the 110m High Hurdles, David Nnawuihe finished 57th/75 overall with a first-try PR. Christian Danquah was 64th; and Conor Staff was 75th, both off their best.
Among the Jumpers, in the High Jump, Sam Green took 2nd/29 overall with a PR-matching 6' 4"; and Isaiah Williams Lewis took 21st with a first-try PR of 5' 4"! In the Long Jump, Noah Calderon finished 14th/64 overall; XiangRong Yue finished 24th with a PR; and Namon Sanchez finished 39th with a PR! In the Triple Jump, XiangRong Yue took 8th/52 overall with a very nice 40' 5" PR; and Namon Sanchez in 31st with his own PR!
Finally, the Throwers. in the Discus, Matt Greski took 15th/54 overall; Dominic Eleftheriou took 44th and set a PR; and Jordan Stone finished in 45th. In the Javelin, Senior Brody Ludman led Cherokee throwers in 19th/70, followed by Hunter Cardone in 37th with a first-try PR throw; and 9th grader Jacob Cranmer in 48th with another first-try PR!
Our photographer was still working on the pictures from the "SJ Elite Meet" and unable to photograph this meet.

On Monday, May 5th, 2025, the Distance Team traveled to Haddonfield for the Bulldogs' well-run event featuring multiple distance races including the 800m, 1600m and 3200m! Almost all Cherokee distance runners participated as Coach Shaklee's review covers!
"On a pretty good evening for racing, the Cherokee boys produced a slew of new PR's at the Haddonfield Distance Night Meet
"First up was the 800. In the freshman division, Evan Amato was our top finishers in 11th place with a 2:13.02! Behind him, Shane Jacob set a huge PR of 2:23.11, 12 seconds better than his previous best to place second in his heat and 25th overall! Nick Carpineto also set a new PR!
"In the Open division, Cherokee took six of the top twenty places led by Logan Bromley who established a new PR of 1:56.73 to finish 2nd! His splits of 61.1 and 55.6 indicate that, in a better paced race, he can run even faster! Ben Realley was 6th in 1:58.9! Jack Tindall dipped under 2:00 for the first time to take 9th! Dom Pileri was 11th, Liam Tindall was 17th with a new PR, and Enzo Corona was 20th. New PR's were also set by Anthony DiBattista and Josh Lowery.
"The 1600 was next and we had four athletes in the freshman division, all of whom set new PR's! Dylan Weiner led the way, going under 5:00 for the first time with a 4:57.0 clocking for 12th! Trayce Slumsky was right behind him in 13th, also under 5:00 for the first time! PR's were also set by Rocco Bellano and Fletcher D'Alessandro.
"In the Open 1600, five of the seven Cherokee runners set new PR's, led by sophomore, Sean Sooy, who placed 3rd with his first sub-4:30 clocking - 4:29.17! PR's were also set by Tate Midora, Max Harada, Jack Finley (under 5:00 for the first time!) and Jonathan Merkel!
"Gavin Danielewicz and Leo Vyvyan were our only two competitors in the Open 3200 and both came away with new PR's! Gavin's 10:13.44 was over 10 seconds faster than his previous best!"

Our photographer was there and found the lighting at the stadium favors the football field. That's not good! He "may have" overworked some pics with PhotoShop but the athletes are still beautiful. Ask their grandmothers! Additional pictures are posted on our Google site.
On Thursday, May 8th, 2025, a four-some of top runners from the Cherokee distance team traveled (further escorted by parents, family and Alum Jack Shea) to the highly-competitive 57th Annual Glenn Loucks Games in White Plains, NY. Ben Realley, Logan Bromley, Liam and Jack Tindall arrived a day before their race to prep for their 3200m the following day.
The video suggests rain welcomed the runners on race day but Cherokee's men seem to have held up well. Ben led the group to the finish line, crossing in 11th/40 overall at 9:07.79, and Jack, crossing in 15th in 9:11.73! They were followed by Logan in 31st in 9:30.25 and Liam in 32nd in 9:30.39.
Coach Shaklee added his thoughts:
"On Friday, May 9th, Ben Realley, Jack Tindall, Logan Bromley and Liam Tindall took the trip up to White Plains, NY for the Louck's Games, 3200m race. The field for this race is always loaded and the winning time is always under 9:00 so we knew it would take some focused racing to stay with the field. Logan and Liam were in the first heat and lost focus during the middle laps. They both ran respectable times of 9:30.25 and 9:30.39, but it was not what they were hoping for. They are capable of more.
Heat 2 went better, with both Ben and Jack setting new PR's! Ben dropped his best from 9:15.93 to 9:07.79 to finish 11th overall! His time is a new sophomore class record and makes Ben the fourth fastest 3200 runner in school history behind Marc Pelerin (9:01.89 - 2002), Sean Wilson (9:04.05 - 2013) and Nick Kuenkel (9:05.87 - 2024)! Jack improved from 9:32.09 all the way down to 9:11.73 to finish 15th overall! His time is a new freshman school record (breaking the mark of 9:21.01 set last year by Ben Realley) and puts Jack at number six on the all-time Cherokee list (Ethan Wechsler - 9:10.90 in 2019 is 5th)!
Our photographer was unavailable but Mr Dingle on NY.MileSplit made an effort! It looks like "the Jack Tindall Race." Details, a video and all the pictures are available at: NY.MileSplit; with the Cherokee pictures alone saved on our Google site.
On Friday-Saturday, May 9th-10th, 2025, the team traveled to Lenape High School for the Burlington County Open Championships.
Among the Sprinters, in the 100m Dash, Freshman Davis Walker finished an impressive 4th/45 overall in the Prelims (11.13) but fell to 7th in the Finals (11.32)! Senior Evan Bryfogle finished 18th (11.51) and Sophomore Lance Cheng finished 35th (12.00). In the 200m Dash, Davis Walker led Cherokee again with an 8th/42 overall place finish (22.92). Junior Mateo Rosario was the next Cherokee finisher in 20th (23.63), and Sophomore Lance Cheng was 27th (24.14). In the 110HH, Senior Sam Green finished 4th/24 overall in the Prelims (16.14) but fell to 7th in the Finals (with exact same time, 16.14). Finally, the no-name 4 X 100m Relay finished 6th/12 overall in 44.33; and the no-name 4 X 400m Relay finished 5th/10 overall in 3:37.14.
Among the Distance Runners, in the 800m Dash, Juniors Logan Bromley finished 1st/30 overall (1:57.96), Dom Pileri finished 4th (2:02.65) and Senior Tate Midora took 9th (2:07.61). In the 1600m Run, Freshman Jack Tindall took 2nd/37 overall (4:26.57) and Sophomore Ben Realley took 3rd (4:29.71)! In the 3200m Run, Sophomore Sean Sooy took 1st/27 overall (10:00.21), Senior Ben Weiner took 3rd (10:03.56), and Sophomore Gavin "Whiskey" Danielewicz took 10th (10:41.37). Finally, the no-name 4 X 800m Relay finished 1st/5 overall in 8:20.01.
Coach Shaklee added more detail on the Distance guys:
"The day after the Louck's Games, 3200, May 10th, was the Burlington County Championship Meet at Lenape High School. The team placed 3rd, behind Rancocas Valley and Willingboro, with 72 points. Fifty-four of those points came from the distance squad.
"The 3200 began the meet and sophomore, Sean Sooy, along with senior, Ben Weiner, got the scoring started! It was a very windy day so it was a tactical race. Sean and Ben Stayed tucked in with the leaders until a little before the start of the last lap when Sean went to the lead and made an aggressive move. Sean's move worked as he held off a fast closing runner from RV to take the title! Ben closed well to finish in 3rd and give Cherokee 16 points from the event!
"Next up for the distance crew was the 4 X 800 Meter Relay. The team of Enzo Corona, Sean Sooy (doubling back from the 3200), Dom Pileri and Tate Midora won by a comfortable margin to give the team 10 additional points!
"In the Open 800, Logan Bromley, Dom Pileri and Tate Midora were all doubling - Dom and Tate coming back from the 4 X 800 and Logan coming in having raced a hard 3200 the night before up in New York! With the wind, Logan wisely chose to stay behind the leader until the last 150 meters when he went to the lead and pulled away to win with a negative split 1:57.96! Dom ran a strong race to take 4th while Tate struggled on his double back from the 4 X 800. Another 14 points for the team!
"Jack Tindall and Ben Realley were also doubling back from the previous night's tough 3200 (and the hours ride home) as they took the line for the 1600. While not 100% recovered, they still managed to run to a 2nd and 3rd place finish to give the team 14 more points!
"Finally, the 4 X 400 team consisted of 3 guys from the distance squad (Enzo, Dom and Logan) teamed with long-sprinter, Carlo Brown (who also ran cross country this year). The squad placed 5th to add 2 additional points to the team score!
"Next up for the team is the South Jersey Group 4 Sectionals at Pennsauken on Friday and Saturday, May 16th and 17th!"
(Our regular reporter picks up.) Finally, in the Field, Senior High Jumper Sam Green took 2nd/20 overall at 6' 0"; and Senior Pole Vaulter Tobin Horwath took 3rd/21 overall at 13' 0"! Also in the Pole Vault, both Junior Justin Cecchetto and Senior Jeff Calabria cleared 9' 0" to finish 20th and 21st. In the Long Jump, Senior Noah Calderon cleared a PR 20' 7" to finish 7th and Sophomore XiangRong Yue cleared 18' 7.25" for 14th! Finally, among the Triple Jumpers, XiangRong Yue returned to clear a PR 39' 1.5", and Noah Calderon returned to clear 38' 7.75"!
Lastly, among the Throwers, in the Discus, Sophomore Matt Greski placed highest for Cherokee in 5th/38 overall at a nice PR of 130' 9"! Following him was Senior Francisco Sandoval who took 16th in 106' 5", and Senior Jordan Stone who took 31st in 86' 1". In the Javelin, Senior Brody Ludman was the highest Cherokee thrower in 20th/39 overall at 121' 1". He was followed by Francisco Sandoval in 22nd at 118' 3". Finally, in the Shot Put, Francisco Sandoval competed in a third event and finished this one in 23rd/36 overall in 39' 1.25".
Details at: NJ.MileSplit. In the final team rankings, Cherokee finished 3rd/16 overall, behind Rancocas Valley (92) and Willingboro (73), with 72 points!
Our photographer was not available for this meet.
On Friday-Saturday, May 16th-17th, 2025, Cherokee's top athletes took the short trip over to Pennsauken High School for the SJ Sectional Championships.
Details are available at NJ.MileSplit and Coach Shaklee is expected to comment as soon as the rain stops, which may total some "Forty days and forty nights."
The first event, the 4 X 100m Relay, proved to be a terrible one for Cherokee's chances in not only that event but two others as well! Senior Sam Green was expected to anchor the 4 X 100m Relay and race the 110m High Hurdles, as well as his unique event, the High Jump. Unfortunately, on his way to winning the 4 X 100m, he pulled his hamstring muscle, took second and had to withdraw from his other two events! Bad news from early on in the meet!
Working through the Sprint events, in the 100m Dash, Cherokee's excellent freshman, Davis Walker clocked 11.08 in the Prelims and finished 2nd/46 overall! Then, in the Finals of the 100m, he dropped that time to 11.04 and took 2nd once again! WOW! Good news early in the meet! Following him, Senior Evan Bryfogle took 18th in 11.44; and Junior Mateo Rosario took 28th in 11.66.
In the 200m Dash, Davis Walker returned to take 6th/39 overall in 22.36 and Mateo Rosario followed in 18th with 23.73! Then, in the 400m, Junior Carlo Brown took 18th/45 overall in 53.08 and Sophomore Colin Feehan followed in 25th at 53.94. In the 110m High Hurdles, Sophomore Connor Staff finished in 29th/36 overall crossing the line in 17.65, and Sophomore David Nnawuihe finished in 36th as he crossed the line in 19.75.
In the 400m Hurdles, Sophomore Christian Danquah finished in 36th while clocking 107.86. Finally, in the 4 X 100 Relay, the team (unknown) finished 7th/14 overall in 43.39; and the 4 X 400m Relay team (unknown) finished 10th/15 overall in 3:32.43.
Coach Shaklee will comment soon but, in the meantime, in the 800m Run, Junior Logan Bromley clocked 1:57.02/44 overall and finished 4th; and Junior Don Pileri clocked 2:02.16 and finished 10th. In the 1600m, Sophomore Ben Realley crossed the line in 4:22.80 and took 2nd/39 overall; Freshman Jack Tindall crossed in 4:24.81 and took 3rd, and Logan Bromley crossed in 4:27.84 and took 5th! Finally, among the distance races, in the 3200M Run, Freshman Jack Tindall took 2nd/36 overall while running 9:32.49; and Senior Liam Tindall took 6th while running 9:50.02!
Before moving on, check out Coach Shaklee's review of events at Sectionals!
"The Cherokee boys finished third at the SJ Group 4 Sectionals at Pennsauken on May 16th and 17th. The distance squad accounted for a substantial amount of the team points.
"The 800 and 3200 were both on Friday. Logan Bromley, Dom Pileri and Tate Midora represented Cherokee in the 800. The pace went out surprisingly slow given the strength of the field. Logan finished well over the last 200 to capture fourth place and advance to the state group meet. Unfortunately, Dom and Tate did not advance.
"The 3200 was set to go off around 8:00 PM but, right before the start of the race, the meet was put on hold due to lightening in the area. That, undoubtedly, affected both the physical and mental preparation of the athletes racing -- Jack Tindall, Ben Realley and Liam Rimdall -- although they did their best to adjust to the delay which ended up lasting over an hour. Once the race began, it was clear that absolutely no one wanted to lead in the breezy conditions. After going through the first 800 in 2:40, somewhere around the 1K mark, Ben went to the lead and put in a strong surge which began to string the field out. Soon, it was a three man race up front with Ben, followed by Jack, followed by Brody Bogos from Cherry Hill East. Both Ben and Jack threw in surges over the next four laps with Jack going to the lead about 450 meter from the finish. Ben, tired from leading most of the race, fell off the pace but the East athlete covered the move and then made one of his own with 300 to go. He sustained it to the finish to take the victory while Jack and Ben settled for second and third, and Liam held on for sixth as all three advanced to the State Group championships.
"The next day, the 4 X 800 Meter Relay was the first distance event with Enzo Corona, Sean Sooy, Dom Pileri and Tate Midora running for the Chiefs. Enzo led off and handed off in second behind Toms River North. Sean, Dom and Tate all maintained that spot and the team finished 2nd and advanced!
"The final distance event of the meet was the 1600 and it was a similar race to the 3200 from the night before. After going though the first three laps at a moderate pace, the racing really got going on the last lap with Ben Realley dropping a 59 second 400 to take second, followed by Jack Tindall in third and Logan Bromley in fifth! Again, all three advanced to the State Group Championships next week.
"The distance group wasn't finished as Tate Midora came back to record the fastest split in the 4 X 400 as the Cherokee squad finished a respectable third in their heat and tenth overall!"
(Our editor continues . . .) In the Relays, the 4 X 100 Relay, finished 7th/14 overall in 43.39; the 4 X 400m Relay team finished 10th/15 overall in 3:32.43; and the 4 X 800m Relay team finished 2nd/15 overall in 8:10.66.
Among the Jumpers, in the Long Jump, Junior Noah Calderon cleared 20' 3.75" and finished 12th/42 overall; followed by Sophomore XiangRong Yue in 29th at 18' 5.5" and Junior Namon Sanchez in 36th at 17' 7.25". In the Triple Jump, the same three men represented Cherokee with one change. First for Cherokee was XiangRong Yue in 17th/28 overall at 38' 11.2.5", followed by Noah Calderon in 19th at 38' 9.5" and Namon Sanchez in 23rd at 38' 5.25". In the Pole Vault, Senior Tobin Horwath tied with three others at 12' 6" and took 5th on misses.
In the Field, in the Discus, Sophomore Matt Greski took 26th/42 overall by throwing 107' 3"; followed by Senior Francisco Sandoval in 34th with a throw of 99' 4", and Senior Jordan Stone in 42nd with a throw of 81' 10". In the Discus, Senior Francisco Sandoval finished in 19th/45 overall with a throw of 124' 0"; Senior Brody Ludman finished in 23rd with a throw of 117' 6", and Junior Hunter Cardone finished in 41st with a throw of 93' 0'. Finally, in the Shot Put, Sophomore Jonah Bluestein finished 33rd/45 overall with a put of 38' 1.75" and Freshman Jacob Cranmer finished 40th with a put of 34' 0.05".

Our photographer was there but he had a tough time. Obviously, he's somewhat handicapped and stayed at the finish line throughout the meet. Sorry to the jumpers, throwers and vaulters. In addition, he had unusual problems with autofocus and had to discard many of his pictures. Still, he kept many marginal pics and still hopes you enjoy seeing yourself among them! Here they are on our Google link.
On Tuesday, May 20th, 2025, Cherokee's Throwers traveled to Bishop Eustace Prep in Pennsauken for the Eustace Throwers Meet, a last-chance meet for those advancing to Groups and a developmental meet for those who are not.
In the Discus, Senior Francisco Sandoval took 7th/26 overall by reaching 103' 05" with his best throw. After him, Junior Junior Dominic Eleftheriou threw 90' 05" for 12th place; Senior Jordan Stone threw 87' 05" for 14th; and Freshman Evan Carbone threw 75' 03" for 20th.
In the Javelin, Senior Brody Ludman set the standard for Cherokee by throwing 118' 10" and took 6th/20 overall. Brody was followed by Junior Hunter Cardone who threw his Jav 104' 7" and took 9th; Freshman Jacob Cranmer who threw 84' 08" and took 13th and Dominic Eleftheriou who threw a PR 74' 04" and took 17th.
Finally, in the Shot Put, Francisco Sandoval was 1st for Cherokee as he put his Shot 40' 2.75" and finished 3rd/25 overall. Following in the Cherokee standings was Sophomore Jonah Bluestein who put his Shot 38' 06" and finished 6th; Jacob Cranmer who put 35' 05" and finished 10th; Junior Edward Firstenberg who put 34' 04" and finished 12th; Junior Cole Nevin who put a first-try PR 30' 04" and finished 18th; Junior Hague Riley who put another first-try PR of 30' 03.5" and finished 19th; and Freshman Aaron Shojai who put another first-try PR of 25' 10.25" and finished 23rd.
Our photographer was unavailable but further details are available at: NJ.MileSplit.
On Thursday, May 22nd, 2025, Cherokee sponsored the Last Chance Meet, a rainy affair that failed to dampen the spirits of the athletes . . . honest, they said so! Some on the distance team did "sharpening" for upcoming races while others took advantage of a "last chance" time trial to mark the end of their seasons.
The meet ran with a slightly modified schedule but it included the 100m Dash where Eric Zheng finished in a first-time PR 12.42, 21st/43 overall, the first Cherokee representative; Shreehan Balasundar finished in first-time PR 12.70, 32nd; and Jacob Nabinger finished in his own first time PR 12.91, 34th
In the 400m Dash, Cherokee's Mateo Rosario clocked a PR 53.05 and finished 4th/35 overall; Davis Walker clocked a OR 53.91 and took 6th; and Luke Ehly crossed the line in 56.44 and took 15th!
There were quite a few Chiefs in the 800m Dash and all ran 0fficial MileSplit PR's, beginning with Matt Muschek in 5th/36 overall at 2:06.85! Following him were Evan Amato in 13th at 2:11.78; Liam Deimler in 15th at 2:12.64; Dylan Weiner in 16th at 2:12.98; Leo Vyvyan in 17th at 2:13.44; Gavin Danielewicz in 18th at 2:14.49; Bruce Novoa in 19th at 2:14.52; and Trayce Slumsky in 23rd at 2:17.64! Maybe we should pray for rain every race day?!
There was an equal number of Chiefs -- eight! -- in the 1600m Run! Dom Pileri finished in front of them all, in 1st/31 overall at a PR 4:29.91; followed by Tate Midora in 3rd at a PR 4:33.06; Sean Sooy in 4th at 4:33.28; Enzo Corona in 7th at 4:40.35; Benjamin Weiner in 11th at 4:46.47; Max Harada in 13th at 4:51.07; Jack Finley in 15th at 5:00.19; and Anthony DiBattista in 16th at 5:01.12.
Our photographer was unavailable because his mother told him to stay out of the rain. Details are available at Cal's Tomahawk Timing and NJ.MileSplit.
Coach Shaklee wrote the following regarding Cherokee's Night Racer # 2 Meet, one his favorite meets because it's devoted to his Distance runners and hundreds throughout the area and it's the last opportunity for most distance runners to set end-of-the-season PR's! GO D!
"Tuesday, May 27th, was Cherokee's Night Racer 2 Meet, an event that featured multiple sections of 800s and 1600s. It the last meet of the season for much of the distance squad . . . and it was a very successful way to finish up! The meet was run at Lenape High School as a fire in the storage shed at Cherokee destroyed the wiring to the stadium lights. The conditions for the meet (unlike so many of the meets this year) were near perfect!
"Things started with a couple heats of super sprint medleys and then the 14 heats of the 800 began! Cherokee had four athletes running the 800, Matt Muschek, Liam Deimler, Shane Jacob and Josh Lowery. Liam, Shane and Josh all set new PRs to end their seasons, while Matt, who had just set a big PR last week, came within a couple of tics of that mark! It was especially good to see Liam, in his last race for Cherokee before heading to Haverford College next year, not only PR by three seconds but challenge for the win in his heat and drop under 2:10 for the first time!
Next up were 19 heats of the 1600! Of the 19 Cherokee athletes who competed in the event, 17 of them came away with new personal records! Freshman, Nick Carpineto got things started off in a big way as he knocked almost 40 seconds off of his previous best in heat 1! In heat 3, freshman, Fletcher D'Alessandro, improved his PR by over 20 seconds and even made a great attempt to win the heat! Jonathan Merkel bumped his PR down a couple of seconds in heat 4. In heat 8, Sam Wright closed out his Cherokee running career on a positive note as he went under 5:30 for the first time, while earlier, in heat 6, frosh, Rocco Bellano, improved by almost 20 seconds down to 5:25! Heat 13 featured four Cherokee runners, all of whom came in with PR's between 4:57 and 5:04. When the race ended, all four had new PR's! Freshman, Trayce Slumsky, knocked a couple of seconds off to finish at 4:55.65; Sophomore, Jack Finley, dropped down to 4:48.53, and freshmen, Dylan Weiner and Evan Amato, both challenged for the heat win, with Dylan taking the victory in 4:46.52 and Evan right behind him at 4:47.47! In heat 14, senior, Anthony DiBattista, did not PR but ran his fastest race of the season to end his career on a positive note! In heat 15, things started off at a good pace but, after the first lap, the leaders slowed and the field bunched up for the next two laps, making it hard to run something fast. Still, sophomores, Bruce Novoa and Leo Vyvyan, both managed to improve on their previous best times! Heat 16 saw sophomore, Gavin Danielewicz, drop seven seconds off of his previous best with a well-run 4:41.95! The final two heats, 18 & 19, featured six Cherokee runners, five of whom set new PR's (senior, Enzo Corona, had been sick and did what he could but was not at his best). Heat 18 saw sophomore, Max Harada, and senior, Ben Weiner, both run excellent races to take third and fifth in their heat with times of 4:32.89 for Max, and 4:33.53 for Ben! Those times put them at 13th and 15th out of all the hundreds of runners on the night! Senior, Tate Midora, sophomore, Sean Sooy, and junior, Dom Pileri, were all in the battle for first in the final heat! Tate, who has mostly focused on the 800, came in with the slowest 1600 PR of the three but ran an incredible last lap to knock 11 seconds off of his previous best to win the race in 4:22.37! Sean and Dom finished 4th and 7th with new PR's of 4:26.26 and 4:26.71 respectively! All-in-all, a great way to end the season!
Our photographer was unavailable for the meet, and so were other MileSplit photographers. Too bad, great stuff! Details at: NJ.Milesplit.
